Carrying a name?!

Scripture: Exodus 20:7
Sermon Series: Freedom to Worship

What have you been taught about how to practically obey the command not to “take the name of the LORD, your God in vain”? The word translated “take” literally means to bear, carry or lift up. What do you think “carrying” a name involves? Do you think our speech is God’s
primary concern in this command?
Spend some time reading Exodus 28 which describes the attire of the High Priest. How can understanding the symbolism of the High Priest “bearing/carrying” the “names” of the twelve tribes of Israel into God’s presence help us better understand what God was intending for his
people when he called them not to bear/carry his name in vain – especially in light of the fact that God had designated the whole nation a “kingdom of priests” in Exodus 19:6?
What picture would people paint of the God of the universe if they only had your actions, attitudes and words on which to base their image? Why do you think our God chooses to reveal his “name” most often through his people? Isn’t that a dangerous proposition?
Jesus was the only human ever to perfectly “bear the name” of the Father (John 14:7-11; 17:6) Take some time to do an honest inventory of your life. Are there any areas in which you are presenting a distorted image of Jesus to those around you? Ask the Lord not only for his forgiveness but for him to enable you through the power of his Spirit to represent him more accurately to a world that deeply needs to see his love through you!
