Prayer: Connecting the Real Me to the Real God

Given on December 26, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Matthew 6:7-15

According to Jesus, what was wrong with a lot of Jewish prayers? What, in his assessment, were the problems with how the Gentiles approached prayer? How do you think Jesus would evaluate some of the typical prayers of Christians in our culture today?
Does Jesus statement, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him,” increase or decrease your motivation to pray? What does your answer reveal about what you really think the purpose of prayer is?
Do you see any connections between the two main sections of the Lord’s Prayer and the 2 main foci of the greatest commandment (love God and love people – Mt. 22)? Since Jesus just told his followers to pray in secret, why do you think he uses plural pronouns (us, our, we) and not singular pronouns (me, my, I) in the second half of this prayer?
In your prayer life, have you practically attempted to follow Jesus’ instructions to “pray like this”? What would that look like? How often should it be prayed? My challenge to us is to really think this through and let it inform how we pray in 2022.
