Who Are You Trying to Impress?

Given on December 19, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Matthew 6:1-18

As you think about your spiritual activities and the “good works” you are attempting to do, what would you say is the motivating force (or forces) behind those practices and activities (be as honest as possible)? Have you ever done the right thing for the wrong reason? What motivation is Jesus wanting to instill in his followers here?
Is Jesus against doing any righteous deeds publicly? Why or why not? How do we reconcile Jesus’ call in this passage to practice our righteousness in secret with his earlier command to “let our light shine so others see our good works”? (5:16)
Are there any parts of your Christian life or walk where your public persona does not match what is genuinely true about you? Why do you think the desire to look impressive in public is so strong for many of us? What “rewards” come when we are highly esteemed by other people in our culture? What rewards come from seeking to be esteemed by our Father?
What do you think can help us to live more and more to please our “audience of One” instead of merely living to please and impress the people around us?
