The Worth of Worship

Scripture: Exodus 20:1-6
Sermon Series: Freedom to Worship

Why do you think the Lord includes verse 2 as a prelude to the 10 commandments? What does this tell us about the basis of our relationship with God? What does it tell us about the role of the law in the lives of his already redeemed people?
We usually don’t think highly of people who are demanding of our loyalty and who become jealous if it is not given. How are we to understand these traits as they apply to the God of the universe who is always good and loving?
How would you define idolatry? Is it merely a superstitious practice of primitive cultures? Paul classifies covetousness/greed as idolatry (Col. 3:5) and the apostle John warns his believing readers to “keep themselves from idols” (I John 5:21) ~ are these apostolic warnings relevant for us today? Is idolatry still a real spiritual danger?
GK Chesterton quipped, “When we cease to worship God, we do not worship nothing, we worship anything!” Do you agree with this statement? What are people looking for in their idols? Is it possible for good things to become idolatrous things? How can we determine if something or someone is in danger of becoming an idol in our thinking?
