The Paradoxical Happiness of the Kingdom

Given on October 10, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Matthew 5:1-12

What would you include on your list of essential ingredients for a happy/good/blessed life? What would most people in our culture include on their list? How does Jesus’ list of characteristics of blessed lives in the beatitudes compare? How can we get to a place where our view of the blessed life corresponds more closely with Jesus’ view?
Jesus begins his first major teaching on the gospel of the kingdom outlining a list of blessings before he moves to the ethical behavior expected of citizens of his kingdom in the remainder of the sermon. What does this arrangement tell us?
Jesus states that if we hunger and thirst for righteousness we are blessed. This is a dumb question but…if you hunger and thirst for something do you already possess that item? How can these words be an encouragement to those of us who still “stumble in many ways”?
Have you ever been ridiculed, misrepresented, excluded, or mistreated when you were trying to do what was right or when you aligned yourself with Jesus? How did that impact you? How is Jesus calling us to respond in these situations? Is that possible?
