Some in the early church claimed that v. 26 implied that if you sinned after you trusted Jesus Christ, then you were destined for judgment. How would you respond to this teaching? Are those being warned in v. 26-31 genuine believers? Why or why not? Consider especially v. 39
If you ask people, even people in the church, to describe God’s character, what place does his holiness and justice have in their conception of his character? In what sense are we to “fear” God? How are we to balance an appropriate fear of God with an appropriate confidence and boldness in drawing near to him (Heb. 10:19-21)?
What enabled these early Christians to “joyfully” (v.34) endure mistreatment at the hands of unbelievers? How do you think you would respond if the state threatened to confiscate all your property if you professed to be a Christian?
In what areas of your life are you finding it hard to continue to trust God because you have yet to see any positive results of your faith and prayers? What can we do or focus on that will help us to keep trusting Jesus without “shrinking back”?
