Salt and Light: A Call to Distinctive Engagement

Given on October 17, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16

In our culture that is increasingly pushing back against the claims and ethics of Jesus and his Kingdom, how do you see Christians responding to this opposition? Are you personally more tempted to assimilate to the norms of our culture or to isolate yourself from our culture to avoid conflict and/or persecution?
What do you think Jesus wanted to communicate to his disciples when he stated that they are the salt of the earth? What functions does salt perform? What things cause believers to lose their saltiness and savor? Where do you see the church losing its saltiness? In what areas are you most tempted to make Jesus and his teaching more palatable to our culture? What can help us avoid compromise?
What do you think Jesus wanted to communicate to his disciples when he stated that they are the light of the world? What tempts us as Christians to isolate ourselves from culture and “hide our light”? What should be the relationship between good deeds and words of truth?
How do you respond to Francis of Assisi’s statement, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words!”
