Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24

What would you say you value most highly in your life? Is your answer that question congruent with how you actually use your money, what consumes your attention, and what you give the majority of your energy to?
Why does Jesus indicate it is foolish to lay up for ourselves treasure on earth? Do you think his reasons still apply today? Jesus indicates that our hearts (the core of who we are) follow our treasure. Have you seen this truth fleshed out in your life or the lives of those you know?
Is Jesus here prohibiting wealth and calling his disciples to a life of abject poverty? Why or why not? How do we practically go about laying up treasures in heaven while we are still walking on this earth?
Though Jesus says that we cannot serve both God and money, the church in the affluent West often seems to try and serve both. How do you see materialism impacting the church today? Has the Lord ever tested your loyalty by putting you in a situation where you were forced to choose to follow him or money? What did you learn?
