If the Gospel is the Good News that we are saved by grace through trusting in Jesus Christ and not by works (Eph. 2:8&9), why are there so many commands in the New Testament? What role does obedience play in the Christian life?

Paul states that he labored hard but with the energy of Christ (Col. 1:29) and that he worked harder than all the other apostles but empowered by the grace of God (I Cor. 15:10). How do we labor and work in His power and grace? How can we tell if we are working in our own strength or laboring with His power?

Jesus bluntly tells his disciples that, “apart from me you can do nothing!” (John 15:5) Given the reality that human beings do a whole lot of stuff “apart” from Christ, what do you think he means? In the same context Jesus links abundant “fruitfulness” with remaining/abiding in Him. What does it mean to remain/abide in Jesus?

What do you think about Augustine’s statement, “Love God and do what you will!” Is it dangerous or liberating?
