Golden Guidance

Given on March 20, 2022 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Matthew 7:12

What saying(s) tend to guide how you live your life? If an outsider were to examine how you were actually living your life, what saying(s) would she conclude were guiding your life?
The Silver Rule of Confucius and the Stoics (“Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you!”) and the Golden Rule of Jesus (“Do to others what you would have them do to you!”) sound very similar. As far as we know, Jesus was the only religious leader to make the slight change in wording from negative to positive. Do you think it is significant? Why or why not?
Which of these rules does our culture seem to prefer? Why do you think that is? Does the Golden Rule prevent a follower of Jesus from saying or doing something that the other person may not like or appreciate? If not, what type of situations would warrant a word spoken or a course of action taken that the other person may not appreciate at the moment?
Spend some time praying and thinking through your relationships. Is the Holy Spirit nudging you take any proactive steps in order to “do for them what you would like to be done for you”?
