Going for the Glory

Given on May 9, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Exodus 33
Sermon Series: Freedom to Worship

What do Moses and the Israelites recognize in this chapter about the possibility of experiencing all the material blessings of God without experiencing his presence with them? How can we keep ourselves from using God as a means to an end instead of pursuing God as an end in himself?
In v. 16 Moses states that it is the presence of God with his people that will enable them to live differently than the world around them. Have you ever attempted to live your Christian life in your own strength (by sheer willpower)? How well did you do? Practically, what steps can we take to rely on God’s strength instead of our own?
Why do you think Moses asked to see God’s glory – especially in light of all his previous encounters with God? Do you think God wants us to be satisfied with our present experience of him? Why or why not? How do you think God’s goodness and the proclamation of his “name” are related to his glory?
Have you come to the point of pursuing God just to get to know God – regardless of the presence or absence of his material blessings? If not, ask the Lord to help you get to that place – it’s a prayer that I’m sure will delight his heart!
