Duel in the Desert!

Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11

Oscar Wilde famously said, “I can resist everything except temptation!” What has been your experience with temptation? What do you think is the source of the temptations we face as believers? How do you respond to the fact that it was the Holy Spirit that led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted/tested?
When do you find yourself tempted to doubt that God really loves and cares for you? Do you think circumstances are an accurate indicator of God’s heart for you? Why or why not? How do you typically respond when you experience some type of suffering in life?
Does it surprise you that the tempter quotes Scripture? How can we guard against being deceived by a twisted use of God’s Word?
Have you ever attempted to achieve a legitimate (even spiritual) goal by using a method that was less than honorable? Are there any areas in which you see the church giving in to the “ends justify the means” temptation of the evil one?
What have you personally found to be helpful in battling the temptations that you face? In this passage, Jesus faces his temptations alone but later in Gethsemane, he asked his disciples to watch and pray with him (Mt. 26:36-46). How can the community of believers be a help in our battle with temptation?
