Delightful Yet Dangerous Desire

Given on November 7, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Matthew 5:27-30

How would you describe our culture’s attitude toward sex? How does it differ from the view Jesus puts forward in this section of the Sermon on the Mount? Which view does the modern church appear to be adopting? Which attitude most closely resembles your own?
Is Jesus here condemning sexual desire? Why or why not? How can we tell when natural sexual desire morphs into “looking with lustful intent”? Is living out Jesus’ advice in this section even possible in our hyper-sexualized culture?
In what areas are you struggling to live with sexual purity? How are you attempting to deal with those struggles? What point was Jesus trying to communicate through his image of self- mutilation? How ruthlessly have you sought to eliminate the sources of sexual temptation in your life?
If you find yourself repeatedly stumbling in this area (as many do), please reach out to a mature friend or leader and ask for help. Remember, God’s forgiveness covers all our sins (even the sexual ones) and his grace is sufficient even for this difficult battle!
