Allowing the Word to Transform Us

Given on June 5, 2022 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Psalm 119; Romans 12:2 and other texts

We are shaped (consciously or unconsciously) by the information that enters our minds. Are you regularly allowing the Scriptures to impact your thinking? If so, what does that practically look like in your life?
How do you go about trying to understand the Scriptures? What resources, teachers, podcasts, apps and software do you rely on to help you in this process? According to II Tim 4:3&4, there will a strong temptation to listen to teachers that say what we want to hear instead of what we need to hear. How can we tell if we are merely listening to get our own interpretations/opinions validated or sincerely wanting to hear the voice of God through his written Word?
The Scriptures urge us to “meditate” on the Scriptures! (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2; Psalm 119:15,78,97,148) What do Christians actually do when they “meditate” on Scripture? What are some of the benefits of this deep pondering of the Word?
We often see biblical writers saying that they “love” and “delight” in the Scriptures and that they find them more valuable than silver and gold. How would you describe your relationship with the Scriptures? What do you think it is about the Scriptures that caused these believers to be so enthusiastic about them?
