In this section, Jacob tastes a bit of his own deceitful medicine. In your life, in what ways have you seen the principle of “reaping what you have sown” lived out? Who do you see Jacob and Leah depending on in this text? Do you see any evidence of Jacob looking to the Lord for direction or guidance in these chapters? What were some of the fruits of this self-reliance in each of their lives?
As you live your life, is your general tendency to rely on yourself and your own ingenuity or to seek God’s guidance and direction…be honest! Why do you think it is difficult for many of us to trust God with the circumstances of our lives? Why do you think the Lord put Jacob in contact with Laban? When the Lord brings some “chastening” circumstances into your life, how do you usually respond?
What do you think of the statement, “We will never truly enjoy God until we are emptied of self-reliance and broken before Him”? See Hebrews 12:3-11 As we look at Jacob’s character, what does this tell us about God’s amazing grace
despite our shortcomings? Read Romans 7&8.
