Sermon Series: Hitting the Nail on the Head: The Powerful Parables of Jesus

What external activities mark someone as a religious or spiritual person in our culture? Which of those activities are actually based on the Word of God? Which of those activities are simply religious traditions or rituals?

Why is external religion often more “comfortable” than pursuing a heart changing relationship with Jesus Christ? Are there any areas in your life where you are honoring God with your lips but your heart is really distant from Him?

Why do you think the disciples had a hard time understanding this seemingly simple parable (v. 16)? Why is it so hard to give up our traditions and rituals…even when they conflict with the Word of God? Do you see any modern “traditions” in the church that are at odds with the Word of God?

“The heart of every problem is a problem of the heart.” Do you agree with this statement? If this is true, how do we go about changing our hearts? See Jer 31 – especially v. 33; 32:39; Ezekiel 36:26-27; Ps. 51:10; 119:11; 139:23; Prov 4:23;
