How does our post-modern world view the concept of “truth”? Are there any values or ethical principles that our culture views as absolutely vital? Why do you think our culture holds these values are essential? How does our culture respond to people who do not agree with its core values?
Based on this passage, what was the “deception” (v.26) that former members of John’s church were promoting? How would you describe John’s concept of truth – especially as it concerns the person and work of Jesus? (See 1 Jn 1:1-4; 2 Jn 1-3; 3 Jn 3). Where do you see the modern/post-modern church compromising on the truth of Jesus Christ?
John and Paul (Acts 20:30) were very aware of the reality of deceptive and false teaching impacting the church. In this passage, what safeguards does John advocate which will keep us from being led astray? How should we evaluate leaders in the church who make bold new declarations of “truth” that they claim come from God – and even substantiate those claims with miraculous signs and wonders? (See Matt. 24:24; II Thes. 2:9; Col 2:6-23).
