How would you describe your relationship with the “world”? How engaged/disengaged should followers of Jesus be in our culture? What challenges do we face as we seek to be “in the world but not of the world”?
In this epistle John urges his readers not to “love the world or anything in the world”, yet in his Gospel he proclaims that, “God so loved the world that he gave his only son”. How can we integrate and apply both of these seemingly contradictory statements as we walk with Jesus?
As you look at the Scriptures, in what sense is the “world” to be loved and valued? As you look this specific Scripture, in what sense is the “world” not to be loved? As you look at your own values and opinions, do the Scriptures or does our current cultural climate exert the greatest influence?
