Our Need for Ease

Scripture: Genesis 2:1-3
Sermon Series: Beginnings

What are some of the values and attitudes of our society that drive us to a hurried lifestyle? As you look back over the last month, how are you doing in balancing work and rest? Why do you think God chose to create in the manner he did? According to Mark 2:27, why does the Sabbath exist? Why do you think humans need a Sabbath? Why do we struggle to take one?

If you tend to be too busy and overcommitted, schedule an hour into this week to simply reflect on “why” you do what you do. What “benefits” does a busy schedule provide? Look at each one of your activities and prayerfully ask if this is something the Lord is asking you to do or simply an activity that is creating unnecessary stress in your life. Ask the Holy Spirit for courage to make any needed changes.

How can busyness cause us to settle for a superficial and mediocre spiritual life rather than deep relationship with God? “We do not rest because we do not trust!” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

Our true Sabbath rest, of which the day is just a shadow, is our rest in the salvation provided by Christ through faith according to Hebrews 4:1-11. Have you experienced this “Sabbath rest”? What is it about the Gospel that should produce restful hearts in those who have trusted in Jesus? Mt. 11:28-30
