Sermon Series: Advent 2010

Do you think “humble” is an appropriate adjective to modify God? Why or why not? How would you define humility? How do you see that character quality manifesting itself in the life and work of Jesus here on earth? How do you see that character quality evidencing itself in your own life?

“Humility is the most counter-cultural characteristic that a believer in Jesus Christ can manifest in our world!” Do you agree with this statement? Is humility a character trait we look for when selecting leaders? Is humility a trait evident in the church today? Is it a trait evident in your life?

As you look at the events of the first advent, what evidence of humility of God do you find? How do we respond differently to those who are proud compared with those who are genuinely humble? How can an understanding of Jesus’ humility change our response to him?

Spend some time this week meditating on Philippians 2:5-8 and ask the Lord for insight into how He might be calling you to “take on the nature of a servant” and “humble yourself” … at your workplace, in your family, in your neighborhood, in the church.
