Scripture: Genesis 1
Sermon Series: Beginnings

What is your present view on the creation of the universe and the creation of humankind? Is it possible to “prove” a particular view of the origin of the universe? What role should modern science play in our understanding of origins? Is it possible to reconcile the Genesis account of creation with current scientific theory? What role does “faith” play in our view of origins? Heb. 11:1-3

There is much debate among Christians over the correct interpretation of Genesis 1-3. How do you typically respond to those who have a different interpretation of this important section of Scripture? Is this an issue that impacts one’s salvation?

If you are a young earth creationist who believes the days in Genesis 1 should be viewed as normal 24 hour days, what do you see as the dangers of holding to an old earth view or a more poetic/symbolic view of Genesis 1? What, in the text of Genesis, leads you to your interpretive view?

If you think the correct interpretation of Genesis 1 is more poetic and allows for long eons of time, what do you see as the dangers of holding to a young earth view? What, in the text of Genesis, leads you to your interpretation?

In your opinion, how scientifically solid is the theory of evolution? What is the downside of using current scientific thinking as the basis of interpreting Scripture? What is the downside of not allowing scientific thinking to impact our interpretation of Scripture?
