God Is NOT My Co-Pilot

Given on February 28, 2021 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Exodus 23:20-33
Sermon Series: Freedom to Worship

As you think about your life, what is the destination you are journeying toward? Who or what is providing you with guidance in reaching that destination? What role does Jesus play in your planning and decision making?
What do you think of the bumper sticker, “God is my co-pilot”? What causes us to want to take the controls and make our own decisions about the direction of our lives? What is the downside of that approach to life? What is the upside of allowing Jesus to guide us to the destination he is preparing for us? What are some of the challenges in allowing Jesus to be our pilot?
Most of us don’t have physical enemies that want to destroy us, yet as Christians we recognize that we are in a battle with the world, our flesh and the Devil. Which of these “enemies” seems most formidable in your life today? When the battle is wearying, where are you tempted to compromise? Do you need to tear down any pillars?
If you are struggling, take heart and remember that victory often comes “little by little” and is the result of a lifetime lived in dependence on God. Don’t go it alone! If you are growing weary, make sure to lean on your sisters and brothers in Christ for support!
