Facing Our Fears

Given on July 8, 2018 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: Genesis 12:10-20
Sermon Series: Beginnings

What circumstances, situations, people, or possibilities produce fear and anxiety in your heart? How do you typically attempt to deal with your fears? What does your response to fear producing situations reveal about what you truly believe about God?
The famine in the land was a test of Abraham’s faith – which he obviously failed! What situations in the past has God allowed in your life that have tested your faith? How did you respond? What current challenges do you face that are testing your trust in Jesus? How are you responding now?
Abraham attempted to manage the famine and his fear of the Egyptians by cooking up his own “creative” (and less than ethical) plan. How have you seen fear lead to compromise and less than upright behavior?
What had Abraham failed to remember during this whole ordeal? What can we do to remember that God is near (Phil 4:5b)?
How has your relationship with God been impacted by the tests of faith he has brought into your life? As you look back at the times where you felt overwhelmed, powerless, out of control, weak, and fearful, how has God showed himself faithful to you ~ even when you were faithless like Abraham? Thank him for his grace!
