Calming a Condemning Conscience

Given on March 8, 2020 by Brett Helvie
Scripture: 1 John 3:19-24
Sermon Series:

What types of things tend to cause your heart to condemn you? Should you always “listen to your heart”? Should a genuine child of God ever feel condemnation? See Rom. 8:1 How do we differentiate between the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the condemning lies of the Accuser?

What do you think John means when he says, “God is greater than our heart”? Is it possible to have an overly sensitive conscience that seeks to be more “holy” than the Holy Spirit? See Romans 14. How does a condemning conscience impact our desire to pursue our relationship with Jesus? What truths can help us calm an overly sensitive conscience? e.g. I John 1:8-2:2; 3:1-3; John 6:25-29; Rom. 5:1-11; II Cor 5:17-21; Col. 1:15-23; Hebrews 4:14-16

How do we reconcile the reality of our prayers that have yet to be answered with John’s statement – “whatever we ask we receive from him”? Is this statement conditioned in any way by the context? See also these Scriptures regarding prayer: Mt. 21:22; James 1:6; Luke 18:1-8; Psalm 66:18; I Peter 3:7,12; James 4:3; Luke 22:42
