A Hope-full Start

What things do people tend to place their hopes in? How trustworthy and secure are these things? What do you typically place your hope in for the future? How has that worked for you in the past? What tends to rob you of hope?

The Word of God encourages us repeatedly to place our hope in the Lord (Ps. 25:3; 33:18; 42:5; 130:7; 147:11; Col. 1:27; I Tim 6:17; etc.) As we face the hurts and challenges of living in the midst of our broken world, is this possible?

As you look towards 2018, how would you rate your level of hope on a scale of 1-10? As you ponder the things that you are hoping for in 2018, how much control do you have over seeing those things realized in your life? What can potentially happen when we place our hope in things totally out of our ability to control?

As followers of Jesus Christ, I believe that we are called to be realistic optimists (Jer. 29:11; Rom 8:24-25; 15:13; I Thes 1:3; Heb 10:23; 11:1). Realizing that some of us are more naturally optimistic (glass half-full types) and some of us are more naturally pessimistic (glass half-empty types), what changes may God be nudging you to make in 2018 to root your hopes more deeply in the Lord?
