The First Christmas Carol

What can we learn from Mary’s response to Gabriel’s message and Elizabeth’s greeting? As you think about the events of the incarnation and of God’s gracious work in your life, what causes your soul to magnify the Lord and your spirit to rejoice in God your Savior?

What were some of the challenges that Mary faced when she willingly accepted God’s special role for her life? What challenges do you face as you seek to be obedient to God’s role for your life? Are there any areas in which you need to be reminded of the fact that “nothing will be impossible with God” (v. 37) and that God will be true to his word (v. 54-55)?

Mary praises God for three of his attributes – his might, his holiness and his mercy. What evidence do you see of these three characteristics of God in the miracle of the incarnation? Why is it important for us today to understand and keep in balance all three of these aspects of God’s character?

Mary’s life is marked by humility and her song is saturated with the significance of humility. Why is humility such an essential element in our relationship with God? Why is pride so devastating to us? Is God humble??
