Do you feel you are depending in any sense on your own religious performance to earn acceptance with God? Do you feel guilty when you skip Bible reading, prayer or church? Based on this passage, is that a healthy or unhealthy guilt?
What are some typical things you do in an attempt to assuage your guilty conscience? (e.g. rationalize, blame others, lower your standards, do more religious stuff, compare yourself to others who are worse than you, etc. etc.) How effective are these approaches? According to this passage, what is the only thing that can truly give us a clean conscience?
If you are a believer, how does the reality that Jesus has eternally removed and remembers your sins no more impact the way you relate to Him? What difference would it make in your attitudes and behaviors if you really believed it? Do you think understanding this truth will be a catalyst for sin or for holiness in your life?
In Hebrews 10:14, the Holy Spirit says that Jesus’ sacrifice has already made us “perfect” even though we are still in the process of being made “holy”. How can both of these be true? In what sense is this verse comforting and challenging at the same time?
