Spiritual R&R

Sermon Date : July 26, 2009
Speaker : Brett Helvie
Scripture : Hebrews 4:1-13

What “rest” is the author saying is available to us today? According to this chapter, what prevents us from experiencing this rest? In what sense do we “rest from our work” when we embrace Jesus as our Lord and Savior? Are you presently experiencing the “rest” of God in your spiritual life?

Many in our culture would claim to be “Christians” simply because they have heard the Gospel and periodically listen to a sermon. Is that enough? What value does that have in God’s eyes?

It seems paradoxical to “make every effort” to enter the “rest” God promises us. How do we go about doing this? Is the author advocating a salvation that comes by works? Why or why not?

What role does the Word of God play in this process of being diligent to enter into the Lord’s rest? In what sense does the penetrating and revealing activity of the Word cause us to cease depending on our own abilities and simply trust in the promises of God?
