Don’t Fear the Reaper!

Sermon Date : June 21, 2009
Speaker : Brett Helvie
Scripture : Hebrews 2:5-18

“Do human beings really matter?”  How is our culture answering that question today?  How does this passage speak to that question?  How does the answer to that question impact our view of life, relationships, work etc.?

Jesus is said to have been made “perfect” (mature, complete) through his suffering.  In what sense does undergoing difficulty “mature” us?  How have you personally grown through painful times?

Jesus experienced death and destroyed the power of death for all who trust in him!  How do you view death?  In what ways does the “fear” of death enslave people today?  How does modern man seek to avoid or “cheat” death?  Is it working?

One of the reasons Jesus became a man was to make the God of the universe approachable (17 & 18).  Spend some time pondering the reality that Jesus knows exactly what it is like to be human – to be tempted, to be tried, and to be tired!  Despite the fact that we are full of faults and failures, he delights to call us “brothers” (v11).  How should these truths impact our relationship with Jesus?
