Revenge or Reconciliation?

Sermon Date : April 19, 2009
Speaker : Brett Helvie
Scripture : Genesis 42:1-45:15

Have you ever been in a position to “get even” with someone who wronged you?  How did you respond?  How does Joseph’s response to his brothers manifest both wisdom as well as forgiveness?

“A guilty conscience is a weighty burden!”  It has now been over 20 years since these brothers conspired against Joseph and grieved their father with their lies.  What impact has this sin had on their conscience? On their sense of peace?  Do you need to “lighten” your conscience by confessing anything to the Lord?

Joseph appears to be “testing” his brothers in order to see if they have truly repented and really are “honest” men as they claim (Gen. 42:11). What evidence do we see in this section of genuine repentance and change? How should we respond when people verbally claim to have changed? Do you think the Lord places us in situations that “test” us to see if our verbal professions match our behavior?

How was Joseph able to get to the point where he could warmly embrace his brothers who had sold him into slavery and “robbed” him of 13 years of his life?  See Gen. 45:5-8 also Rom. 8:18
