The Fight Of Our Lives

God had promised to protect Jacob and bring him back to his homeland (Genesis 28:15). What fears did Jacob have to overcome as he made his way back home? How did the Lord seek to encourage him on his way? What fears do you have as you seek to follow the Lord? In what ways has the Lord attempted to encourage you?

There is a school of thought that proclaims that if we are following God then all our paths will be smooth and free of troubles. Do you agree? How do you think Jacob felt when he heard Esau was already coming to meet him with 400 men? How can these major challenges in life actually cause us to grow closer to God?

Jacob brought his fears to the Lord and he took steps to prepare for his meeting with Esau. Do you think Jacob’s plans were a wise response to meeting his angry brother or an evidence of self-reliance? Why? How can we determine if our actions are consistent with our trust in God or an attempt to rely on our own strength?

“God often has to break us before He can bless us!” What do you think of this statement? What lessons did Jacob/Israel learn from his wrestling match?
