Given the fact that Jacob is running away from the problems caused by his own deception, what strikes you about the fact that God was still willing to appear to Jacob and bless him greatly? What does this tell us about God’s character and his relationship with sinful human beings?
What do you think is the symbolic significance of the ladder or stairway between heaven and earth in Jacob’s dream? How does Jesus view this story? (see John 1:43-51; John 14:6)
What promises did the Lord make to Jacob? What requirements did God make of Jacob before He blessed him? How did Jacob respond to the Lord’s gracious revelation of Himself and his promises? As followers of Jesus Christ, what promises does the Lord make to us? See Hebrews 13:5-6; Jude 24-25; Philipians 1:6; Ephesians 2:8-9 etc. How are we called to respond to his wonderful promises?
