The Dangers and Difficulties of Deceit

Have you ever thought you were clever to get around one of God’s commands without experiencing any negative consequences? What was the end result of your clever scheming? In what ways did Isaac, Rebekah and Jacob all show a lack of trust in God in this “Jerry Springer-like” episode of Chapter 27?

Deceit has a way of mushrooming beyond what we originally intended. How has your life been impacted by deceit? Isaac here is scheming to overturn the Lord’s word that Esau would serve Jacob (Genesis 25:23) and Rebekah and Jacob engage in deceit in order to “help” God fulfill His word. How could they have responded differently and avoided this deceit that ultimately tore the family apart? Isaiah 28:16; Proverbs 3:5-6; Numbers 32:23; Ephesians 4:15, 25

What were the unintended consequences of this deception on this family? Are there any areas of your life in which you are not being honest or attempting to deceive someone in order to get your own way… remember, when we sow the wind we can end up reaping the whirlwind!
